Every detail on the Rut was built around the job: getting an animal broken down cleanly, safely, and quickly. The straight-back blade profile gives you a flat spine to rest a finger or thumb on for control and leverage, while the precision tip lets you handle delicate cape work around the head, feet, and hide, and the full sweeping belly powers the long slicing cuts of skinning and quartering. The high flat saber grind slices through hide and connective tissue without wedging. The same geometry earns its keep in camp — slicing, carving, whittling, feather sticks, and the detailed bushcraft work of everyday outdoor life.
The stonewash finish handles blood, brush, and pack abuse without flashing sun back at a spooked herd. And a series of thoughtfully placed jimping points — one on the spine near the tip, one on the spine at the front of the handle, one on the spine at the rear of the handle, and one on the handle where your forefinger rests — give you constant tactile awareness of where your hand is on the knife, even in the dark, in the cold, or when your hands are already covered in what you're working on.
The Rut handle is precision-machined from your choice of authentic UltreX® G-10 or UltreX® Micarta® — American-made composites from Norplex-Micarta in Postville, Iowa. G-10 scales weigh in at just 6 oz complete; Canvas Micarta drops that to 5.4 oz. The scales feature a grooved thumb ramp for confident forward control, a subtle surface texture that improves grip when wet, and a recessed lanyard hole that keeps your lanyard managed and off your palm. Ergonomic contouring distributes pressure across your hand so you can grip, cut, and work for hours without hot spots or fatigue — even when the animal is bigger than expected and the field dressing takes longer than you planned.

CPM MagnaCut can be sharpened on any quality sharpening system — diamond stones, ceramic rods, guided systems, or a whetstone. It holds an edge longer than most traditional stainless steels, but it doesn't require specialized equipment to bring back to razor sharpness. Regular touch-ups with a leather strop between sharpenings will keep the edge cutting cleanly through a full hunting season. Recommended edge angle is 20 degrees per side.
Both are premium American-made composites from Norplex-Micarta, and both are precision-machined to the exact contours of the Rut handle. The differences come down to feel, weight, and how they respond to moisture. G-10 is a fiberglass-and-epoxy laminate that's non-porous, low-maintenance, and wipes clean — it won't absorb water, blood, or oils and stands up to weather better over a lifetime of use. Canvas Micarta is a woven cotton fabric saturated in phenolic resin, giving it a warmer, more natural feel in the hand and a grip that actually gets tackier when wet. G-10 versions of the Rut weigh 6 oz; Canvas Micarta versions weigh 5.4 oz. Choose G-10 for maximum weather resistance and low maintenance; choose Canvas Micarta for warmth in the hand and wet-condition grip.
Batoning is not recommended for the Rut. The Rut is a purpose-built hunting knife optimized for precision field dressing, caping, quartering, and camp tasks like carving, whittling, and detailed bushcraft work. Its blade thickness and geometry are engineered for control and clean cuts, not for splitting hardwood. Yes. The Rut's modular Kydex sheath features standard-spaced eyelets that accept aftermarket MOLLE attachments and belt loops. The included belt clip and drop plate are detachable and easily swapped for your preferred carry setup, whether that's a chest rig, pack strap, or pouch panel.
